Bajaj's executive director, Rakesh Sharma, revealed that they are manufacturing a much more affordable Bajaj Chetak electric scooter. Currently, Bajaj Chetak has two variants in its portfolio, including Urbane priced at Rs 1.23 lakh and the Premium version at Rs 1.43 lakh. But this upcoming Bajaj Chetak Scooter is expected to launch by May 2024 at just Rs. 1 Lakh.
Ather recently launched the Rizta scooter at an affordable starting price of Rs. 97,546. Moreover, Ola has also reduced the S1X price to Rs. 69,999. Now, Bajaj aims for a similar move by manufacturing an affordable version of Bajaj Chetak Scooter. Rakesh Sharma unveiled the entry-level Chetak, which might have a hub motor and smaller battery to cut costs.
Let us know more about this affordable Bajaj Chetak Scooter:
The prototype of this upcoming Bajaj Chetak scooter was spotted a few months ago. During testing, the model was seen with the same body parts as existing models. It looks similar to current Chetak scooters. However, some features might have been removed to reduce costs.
Bajaj Auto might switch to plastic bodywork from metal, but this could be expensive. Hub motors, though typically less powerful, can still offer decent performance. Since the current Chetak already has a lower top speed compared to rivals, the cheaper variant's performance might stay similar.
The recent rise in electric scooter prices, due to the end of the FAME subsidy and the temporary EMPS incentive until July, has made a more affordable Bajaj Chetak necessary. This move helps Bajaj Auto stay competitive against rivals like TVS iQube, Ola S1 X, and Ather Rizta. Bajaj has been expanding its presence, with the Chetak available in 164 cities via 200
experience centres. A lower starting price will likely attract more customers to Bajaj showrooms.
