Japan’s big four spearhead the standardisation of swappable batteries.
Suzuki joins Honda Motor Co., Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., and Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. in the Swappable Battery Consortium for Electric Scooters. The consortium aims to standardise swappable batteries and replacement systems. This is a major step towards battery sharing and promoting electric two-wheeler usage in Japan.
The consortium has based the common specs on the TP21003 technical paper. The development standards are optimised for swappable batteries that address the issues of drive range and charging time. Moreover, the consortium has been working with e-Yan OSAKA field tests to encourage the adoption of electric scooters.
The partnership resulted in Gachaco, Inc., a sharing service for standardised swappable batteries. In addition, ENEOS, Honda, Kawasaki Motors, Suzuki, and Yamaha Motor have provided a BAAS (Battery as a Service) solution. This enables electric scooters to travel longer distances, eliminating worries about running out of battery charge. Gachaco services use Honda Mobile Power Pack e, meeting common spec requirements.
With more reliable and accessible battery-sharing solutions, eco-friendly riders will have more choices for their mobility. The collaboration of the big four Japanese manufacturers will help promote electric scooters in Japan and other countries.
Suzuki plans to launch its new Burgman Electric scooter in India next year, competing with TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and the upcoming Honda Activa Electric. The expected price of the Suzuki Burgman electric is around Rs 1.5 lakh.
