Some Japanese Companies to Develop Hydrogen-Powered Engines

Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha have taken approval from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

A joint announcement was made by Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha about the approval from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to form a technological research association called HySE (Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology). It is a significant development in the automobile industry.

The formation of HySE indicates a joint effort by the four manufacturers to develop hydrogen-powered engines for small mobility, which can significantly impact the environment. The collaboration of these companies for unified standards for upcoming electric two-wheelers shows their commitment to sustainable development.

Research and Development of the Hydrogen-Powered Engines

The HYSE research will be on developing hydrogen-powered engines for small mobility vehicles, including two-wheelers. The roles assigned to each company also suggest that they will be working on different aspects of the development process.

Honda focuses on model-based development, Suzuki on functionality and reliability, and Yamaha and Kawasaki on hands-on research. However, it is important to note that the official announcement does not explicitly state that two-wheelers will be the main focus of the research.

Moreover, Yamaha will also study Hydrogen tanks and Hydrogen refueling systems for small mobility. On the other hand, Kawasaki Motors mainly researches auxiliary equipment required for tanks and supply fuel systems and the equipment that is installed between the fuel tank and injector.

Future of the Collaboration Between the Big Four Giants

This collaborative effort between these four Japanese automakers to develop hydrogen-powered engines for small mobility vehicles is significant. While the use of hydrogen does pose technical challenges, it has the potential to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector significantly. It will be interesting to see how this research progresses and what kind of small mobility vehicles will be powered by hydrogen in the future.
