The emergence of high-end electric scooters in the Indian market, such as the Ather 450X, has seen a surge in its sales due to a combination of central and state-level subsidies. These electric scooters provide a feasible alternative to traditional ICE scooters. As a result, Ather Energy is expanding its product offerings and is preparing to release the 450S, a more affordable version of the 450X.
Recently, Ather trademarked the '450S' name, preventing competitors from using the same terminology. The Ather 450X electric scooter is successful due to its advanced features, functionality, and build quality. However, the upcoming 450S e-scooter is expected to omit some of the high-tech features found in the 450X Pro Pack model.
Ather Energy submitted a trademark application for 450S at the end of March 2023, which was approved. The business also registered a trademark of its 450S logo. It may launch its thirds scooter in the future, but there is no information regarding it. However, it is confirmed that the 450 S will have fewer features than the 450X. So, the company can sell 450S scooters at a lesser price to earn FAME incentives. The scooter could not include features such as a 7-inch TFT touchscreen, riding mode, and auto hold. The competitive price of this Electric scooter can increase its sales in the market.
Ather's new base model of the 450X electric scooter in India is priced at Rs 98,183 (ex-showroom, Delhi) including FAME II and state subsidy. The motor of the scooter is the same as the feature-loaded ProPack model, but it comes with fewer features and a slower charger. The base model has no ride modes. Instead, there is a default setting that provides acceleration and performance similar to what the Ride mode in the ProPack version offers.
The scooter has a top speed of 90km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 40km/h in 3.3 seconds. It provides a 146-km driving range on a single charge, which is mechanically the same as the ProPack version. It also shares the same design, structure, wheels, suspension, and colour palette. However, it differs in charging, warranty, and features.
The ProPack model of the Ather 450X comes with additional features compared to the new base edition. For instance, it has a multi-colour display and connectivity features such as document storage, ride statistics, and smartphone pairing. It also comes with OTA updates, onboard maps, navigation, push location from the Ather app, and multi-stop trip planning.
The Electric scooter also has a hill assist, park assist, and tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). However, both models share the same 6.4kW motor, 146-km driving range, top speed of 90km/h, and acceleration time from 0 to 40km/h in 3.3 sec.
Launching the 450S electric scooter will help Ather Energy compete more effectively with its rivals in the Indian electric two-wheeler market, especially with Ola Electric. The S1 Air, one of Ather's main rivals, is already available with a starting price of Rs 84,999.
However, the 450 can offer a more affordable alternative to the premium 450X, which could help Ather to capture a larger market share. With Ola Electric becoming India's top seller of two-wheeler EVs recently, the electric scooter segment competition has become even more intense.
