Updated Interceptor 650 from Royal Enfield: Expected to have 750cc engine

There would seem to be nothing but positives for Royal Enfield. The brand is launching the much-awaited update to their popular Interceptor 650, which will come with a 750cc engine. This further nudges for performance while adhering to the classic lines that the fans love so much.

The unit is said to increase the motorcycle's power and torque, helping to place it at the forefront of its mid-size segment. The Interceptor can come with improved suspension and brakes, making it an excellent ride for both new and skilled riders.

Quick Highlights:

  • New 750cc engine is under development.
  • Interceptor expected to debut with 750cc engine.
  • Launch anticipated between 2026 and 2027.
  • Improved power and torque are expected with the upgrade.
  • Prototype features dual front brake discs tested.

Royal Enfield introduced the first modern 650cc motorcycle, the Interceptor, nearly seven years ago. While the bike has seen various updates over the years, the most significant enhancement is anticipated within the next two years.

Royal Enfield's Shift from 650cc to 750cc Engine Development
updated Interceptor 650

We have learned that the company has been working on increasing the displacement of its engines from 650cc to 750cc. Their first model built to showcase this is anticipated within two to three years of its release date. In fact, it hopes to make an extra 5-7bhp by upping this to a parallel twin.

A prototype of the Interceptor was recently spotted testing close to Royal Enfield's R&D facility in Chennai. This test mule flaunted dual front brake discs, a first for the brand, though this is probably part of component testing. We expect the first bike to use this motor will be the Himalayan, as a test mule for this adventure bike was seen a few weeks ago. It will be marketed not as an adventure bike but as a sports tourer with a 19-inch front wheel setup.

Royal Enfield's 650cc twin engine is indeed one of the finer things coming out of India. It delivers overall refinement, excellent NVH characteristics, and plenty of torque. The new 750cc engine should be better, which might just help the company in India and overseas markets.
