Royal Enfield is putting significant effort into developing its electric bikes. The company continues to manage its ICE portfolio alongside this electric venture. Introducing the first Royal Enfield electric bike is expected to take a few years.
The company's entry into electric mobility marks a new and unique path that demands a fresh approach to development, starting from the very beginning. Royal Enfield aims to establish itself in the growing electric motorcycle market by dedicating its resources and expertise to electric bike development.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, Royal Enfield's electric bike launch was delayed. Test mules of the electric bikes still need to be spotted, although it is common for OEMs to conduct testing in overseas locations.
The only evidence available now is a leaked glimpse of the Royal Enfield Electrik 01 Concept, which surfaced online last year. Without official information, Pratyush Rout created a digital render based on the leaked concept. It gave enthusiasts an idea of what Royal Enfield's electric bike could look like.
The render of the Royal Enfield electric bike showcases some interesting design elements. At the same time, the overall silhouette is reminiscent of current bestsellers like the Classic 350. There are some notable changes in the body details. Retro elements such as the round headlamp, rear-view mirrors, and teardrop fuel tank are retained.
Although the fuel tank is purely for aesthetics, it could offer a compact storage space inside. The front girder fork is an intriguing feature typically associated with vintage motorcycles. Standard telescopic forks and USD forks largely replace girder forks in modern motorcycles.
The battery pack housing is fully covered with rugged-looking panels. The deep grooves on the panelling add a distinctive character to the bike's appearance. The triangular boxes towards the rear of the bike evoke a sense of familiarity with Royal Enfield's current range of motorcycles.
The colour theme comprises a primary and contrasting shade to highlight the bike's outer layers. The contrasting shade is also present on the headlamp cowl, graphics, and alloy wheels, enhancing the visual appeal of the electric bike.
The performance of the Royal Enfield electric bike is expected to be similar to its 350 cc siblings. The initial launch could feature a roadster model designed for city commuting. However, other formats, such as electric adventure motorcycles and cruisers, may be introduced later on to cater to different riding preferences.
The Royal Enfield electric bike range is anticipated to be around 100 to 150 km. Since Royal Enfield bikes are known for their larger size, incorporating a higher-capacity battery pack should be manageable. However, balancing performance and affordability is crucial for the company. They are finding a middle ground that ensures a good mix of performance while keeping the electric bike available at a reasonable price.
Royal Enfield has substantial plans for the electric segment, as shown by their investment commitments of Rs 2,000 crore. This investment will be part of the PLI scheme and span over five years.
