Pictures of the KTM 990 SMT test bike have been circulating on the internet for quite some time now. Now we've seen new images of the upcoming Austrian model from Europe, and here's a closer look at what it reveals.
The KTM 990 SMT test bike sports a similar long, rugged stance to the ADV model but distinguishes itself with smaller 17-inch alloy wheels. This choice of design makes the bike unique and functionally revolutionary compared to the spoke wheels of the 990 Adventure. With road-oriented tyres, the SMT is ready to set sail on its sporty adventures. In addition, the smaller wheels are expected to improve handling, making it more agile compared to larger wheels, which can make the bike feel less responsive.
The body of the KTM 990 SMT is very similar to that of the 990 Adventure and looks close to production ready. The front features a central LED projector flanked by small LED DRLs, with the LED indicators placed farther and higher. Additionally, the SMT is equipped with a slightly longer visor, which we expect will be more prominent in the final design.
The KTM 990 SMT will feature a TFT display with all key readouts and smartphone connectivity. Expect a range of rider assistance, including traction control levels, ride modes, engine braking options, switchable ABS, and more. Moreover, a 947cc parallel-twin LC8c engine will power the bike. It produces 128bhp and 103Nm in the RC R, but these figures are expected to be lower for the 990 SMT.
KTM plans to introduce its larger-capacity bikes to India in the coming months, though it's still uncertain which specific models will arrive in the country.
