Kawasaki Hydrogen Bike Prototype Showcased: Know What’s Revealed

Kawasaki has finally unveiled its new hydrogen-powered motorcycle at the Suzuka racetrack on July 20. This motorcycle belongs to a research project commissioned by Kawasaki in March 2023, but work actually started even earlier. They first showed the hydrogen version of their Ninja H2 engine in October 2021. The company showcased some sketches of the bike in November 2022 and the real bike in December 2023. Kawasaki will be working on a hydrogen bike that can actually hit the road sometime in early 2030.

How’s the Looks

Kawasaki hydrogen bike Side Angle

The Kawasaki hydrogen bike looks a lot like the H2 SX model. It has star-shaped wheels, disc brakes, a single-sided swingarm, and a trellis chassis. The upcoming Kawasaki hydrogen bike’s chassis is stronger to hold the hydrogen fuel canisters and supply system. Furthermore, the bike has a unique look with lots of blue instead of the usual green seen on Ninjas.

The hydrogen fuel is stored in large rear pods because hydrogen requires more space than gasoline. It's interesting to consider how far the bike can go with this setup.

Key design features include:

  • H-shaped LED headlight
  • Tail lamps mounted on the rear cylinder
  • Segmented fairings
  • Turn signals on the mirrors
  • Tall windscreen

How’s the Performance

The hydrogen engine in Kawasaki's new bike is based on the 998cc supercharged motor from the H2 series. It has been modified to inject hydrogen directly into the cylinders. This prototype is built on the Kawasaki H2 SX but has been significantly reengineered for the new fuel.

There are no specific details yet about the bike's performance. For comparison, the H2 SX produces 210 bhp and 137 Nm of torque. Moreover, this project is part of HySE (Hydrogen Small Mobility & Engine Technology), a collaboration between Japanese manufacturers like Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Toyota.
