Ola Electric released the second generation of its most beloved electric scooter model - S1 Pro Gen 2, on 15 August 2023. On the first look, both electric scooters look quite similar to each other. However, on a much closer look, there are major differences between the two. The 2023 S1 Pro Gen 2 is based on the company’s new Gen 2 platform. This new platform already hosts current models like S1 Air & S1 X. Now, let’s look at the key aspects where Ola S1 Pro Gen 2 surpasses the previous S1 Pro Gen 1. Ola S1 Pro Gen 1 VS S1 Pro Gen 2: Design Both the Ola S1 Pro Gen 1 & Gen 2 sport a nearly identical design, emphasising a modern-retro aesthetic. The front features a twin-pod LED headlight arrangement with an oval LED DRL. However, Gen 2 stands out with a flat floorboard, replacing Gen 1's spine. The aluminium pillion grab rails in Gen 1 have been substituted with a sturdier single steel tube rail in Gen 2. Notably, Gen 1 offers a wider variety of 12 bright colours, while Gen 2 is available in five muted shades: Jet Black, Matt White, Stellar (blue), Midnight Blue & Amethyst (dark purple). Ola S1 Pro Gen 1 VS S1 Pro Gen 2: Mechanical ChangesUnder the hood, Ola Electric has made significant changes for the new-gen electric scooter. The chassis is lighter and simpler, incorporating fewer parts to reduce costs while maintaining strength. Suspension changes are evident; Gen 2 features a telescopic fork (replacing Gen 1's single-arm front suspension) and a vertically mounted rear monoshock (replacing the horizontal one in Gen 1). The elegant single-sided cast aluminium swingarm in Gen 1 is swapped for a conventional steel box section swingarm in Gen 2. These modifications make Gen 2’s weight 5kg lighter at 116kg. However, the underseat storage has decreased from 36 litres to 34 litres, the seat height is 5 mm taller at 805mm, and ground clearance has reduced to 160mm. Ola S1 Pro Gen 1 VS S1 Pro Gen 2: Battery & Motor ChangesBoth generations is powered by a 4.0kWh battery, but Gen 2 has a redesigned, lighter battery and motor. Gen 2's motor delivers 30% more peak power, enabling a quicker acceleration (0-40kmph in 2.6 seconds) and a top speed of 120km h, compared to Gen 1's 116km h. Despite identical battery capacities, Gen 2 achieves an extended ARAI-certified range of 195 km due to optimised efficiency, compared to Gen 1's 181 km. Charging times remain consistent at 6.5 hours for a full charge from zero percent. Ola S1 Pro Gen 1 VS S1 Pro Gen 2: Features & Electronics ChangesIn terms of features, both Gen 1 and Gen 2 are identical, offering four riding modes (Eco, Normal, Sport & Hyper) along with music and call control, proximity unlock, cruise control, and built-in speakers. The only notable difference is the touchscreen console resolution, reduced from 1260 x 768 pixels in Gen 1 to 800 x 480 pixels in Gen 2. However, this change doesn't significantly impact the user experience. Should you buy the Ola S1 Pro Gen 1 now or wait for the Gen 2?If you're considering the Ola S1 Pro, waiting for the Gen 2 is advisable. Despite its slightly less premium appearance and a higher price tag of approximately Rs 7,500, Gen 2 offers practical advantages such as lower weight and a flat floorboard. Additionally, the transition to more conventional suspension enhances Gen 2's safety features, making it a preferable choice over Gen 1.
