Two Wheeler Sales Report For June 2023

The sales report of five leading two-wheelers, including TVS, Bajaj, Royal Enfield, Hero and Honda.

Sales numbers for the top 5 OEMs in the Indian two-wheeler industry for June 2023 show a significant change in the sales numbers.  It shows a decline in overall sales on both a year and monthly basis. Higher two-wheeler expenses, increased EMIs, and decreased rural mood contributed to dismal demand in the two-wheeler motorbike market in June 2023

Total sales (domestic + exports) dropped YoY and MoM to 14,36,245 units in June 2023, down from 15,39,821 units in June 2022. This amounts to a volume decrease of 1,03,576 units. However, when compared to 15,53,319 units sold in May 2023, MoM sales declined by 7.54%, resulting in a 1,17,074 unit volume de-growth.

Considering the sales of the five top OEMs in the Indian two-wheeler industry sales year-on-year basis, increased by 0.67 %. In June 2022, 11,87,210 units were sold, which increased to 11,95,133 units in the previous month. MoM sales were down by 10.66% from 13,37,749 units sold in May 2023.

In June 2023, Hero two-wheeler sales fell 8.73% year on year and 16.83% month on month to 4,22,757 units. In June 2022 and May 2023, 4,63,210 and 5,08,309 units were sold, respectively. The hero now controls 35.37% of this list. The Harley-Davidson X440 neo-vintage roadster will likely enhance sales in the coming months. However, the company also debuted the new Xtreme 160R 4V in June and a new 100cc Passion Plus and HF Deluxe line.

Honda sales fell year on year and month on month to 3,02,833 vehicles in June 2023. It was 22.14% less than the 3,55,560 units sold in July 2022. MoM sales declined 2.70% from 3,11,144 units sold in May 2023 to 3,11,144 units sold in May 2023. However, TVS increased its unit sales by 22.14% year on year to 2,35,833 in June 2023, and MoM sales fell by 6.67%. The same could be said for Bajaj Auto's 1,66,292 units and Royal Enfield with 67,495 units. Both automakers had YoY increases of 32.95% and 34.27%, respectively. However, the MoM sales fell about 14.64% and 4.66%.

The two-wheeler Exports fell 31.62% year on year to 2,41,112 units in June 2023, down from 3,52,611 units in June 2022. MoM performance was somewhat higher, with an 11.85% increase over 2,15,570 units sold in May 2023. Every OEM on this list reports a YoY de-growth but MoM progress.

Bajaj Auto Limited led the export list with a 52.82% share, with shipping of 1,27,357 vehicles taking place last month. It was a 33.27% YoY decrease from 1,90,865 units sold in June 2022, but exports increased by 12.82% MoM from 1,12,885 units sent in May 2023. TVS exports were 68,568 units in the previous month, a 31.86% decrease from the 1,00,625 units sold in June 2022. However, a 2.95% increase over the 66,605 units sold in May 2023. Honda, with 21,337 units, Hero MotoCorp, 14,236 units, and Royal Enfield, 9,614 units, all had YoY declines but MoM gains.

Despite a YoY and MoM dip in Overall sales (domestic + exports), Hero MotorCorp topped the list with 4,36,993 units sold last month. It was followed by Honda, which sold 3,24,093 vehicles in June 2023, a 15.57% YoY and 1.61% MoM decrease. 

On the other hand, TVS's overall sales increased by 3.64% year on year to 3,04,401 units in June 2023. Despite a 4.66% drop in MoM sales, Bajaj Auto saw a YoY and MoM dip in sales last month, with 2,93,649 units sold. However, Royal Enfield saw a YoY increase of 25.57% to 77,109 units in June 2023.
