TVS surpasses Honda in February sales figures: Analysis and implications explained

In February 2023, TVS Motors surpassed Honda in terms of total sales by selling 276,150 units. This was a significant difference from Honda's total of 247,175 units.

There was a slight decline seen for TVS sales as compared to February 2022 when they sold 281,714 units. Despite this, it was surprising that they were still able to outperform Honda, which has several products that are top-selling.

To provide context, the Honda Activa has been a top-selling product for several years, despite being expensive and lacking features. According to the report of Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers (SIAM), Honda sold an impressive 130,001 units of the Activa in January 2023. This sale is more than double the number of TVS Jupiter 110s sold.

Likewise, in January 2023, the Honda Shine dominated the motorcycle sales, with 99,878 units sold. While this number is less than half of the sales of the Hero Splendor Plus, which Interestingly, also has an engine derived from Honda. But then too, it is more than three times higher than the TVS Raider's sales, which stood at 27,233 units.

Shifting the focus to the sales numbers of 150 to 200cc motorcycles. TVS emerged as the leader with their Apache lineup selling 28,811 units in January 2023. In comparison, the Honda Unicorn came in second with 22,019 units sold.

Furthermore, Honda's sales figures suffer due to their high pricing and low value for money. A prime example of this is the Honda CB300R. Despite being more expensive than the TVS Apache RR 310, Honda CB300R has significantly fewer features.

Additionally, Honda has a 200 cc engine capacity limit. Beyond 200 cc, Honda’s lineup is exclusive to the BigWing dealerships. Further, they are only present in a limited number of Tier 2 cities.

Moreover, Honda appears to be unaware of the customer’s requirements. TVS has a diverse range of offerings that cater to various needs. TVS includes the Radeon for everyday commuters, the Raider for sporty city dwellers, the Apache series for weekend riders and serious track enthusiasts. Further, TVS also offers sporty scooter space with the NTorq 125.

Meanwhile, Honda's only premium offering, apart from the BigWing bikes, is the underwhelming Hornet 2.0.

Honda needs to closely examine its strategy for the Indian market and focus on two key aspects:

Firstly, Honda should consider bringing in models from its global lineup. For example, the sporty CBR150R or the classic-styled Rebel 300, among others. This would establish a reputation for the company as a manufacturer willing to take risks.

Secondly, Honda should contemplate a uniform reduction in its pricing strategy; otherwise, it may continue to play second fiddle to more proactive motorcycle manufacturers such as TVS.
