Suzuki Launches Burgman Electric Scooter – A New Way to Move in the City

A Comprehensive Overview of Burgman Electric Features, Specs, Field Tests, and Battery Sharing Initiatives.

The electric scooter segment has seen the entry of two mainstream two-wheeler brands like Bajaj and TVS. Further, Honda also plans to launch two new electric scooters in India next year. Yamaha is also gearing up to introduce electric scooters around the same time. In addition, Suzuki is expected to join the race with its first electric scooter by then.

The e-Burgman is the latest electric two-wheeler from Suzuki Motor Corporation that has been unveiled with official images and specs. The electric scooter, which has been spotted testing in India, will now undergo advanced testing in Tokyo, Japan. This is an exciting new development for the electric two-wheeler market.

e-BURGMAN by Suzuki: The significance and expectations of the field tests

Suzuki has partnered with Gachaco Co., Ltd., a battery-sharing service based in Tokyo. The company did this partnership as part of a larger initiative to boost battery sharing and e2W usage in Japan. The field tests will last for three months, from April to June 2023. Furthermore, the test will involve eight units of the Burgman electric scooter.

The field tests will involve Suzuki Motor Corporation staff and customers who volunteer for the project. The tests will gather vital data from daily activities, such as commuting, school, and shopping. The data will be used to develop the final version of the Burgman Electric Scooter.

The e-Burgman is a Class-2 light electric scooter with impressive specs. It can cover up to 44 km on a single charge at a constant speed of 60 km/h. It has a rated output of 0.98kW, maximum output of 4.0kW, and maximum torque of 18Nm

Japan’s big four spearhead the standardisation of swappable batteries.

Suzuki joins Honda Motor Co., Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., and Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. in the Swappable Battery Consortium for Electric Scooters. The consortium aims to standardise swappable batteries and replacement systems. This is a major step towards battery sharing and promoting electric two-wheeler usage in Japan.

The consortium has based the common specs on the TP21003 technical paper. The development standards are optimised for swappable batteries that address the issues of drive range and charging time. Moreover, the consortium has been working with e-Yan OSAKA field tests to encourage the adoption of electric scooters.

Honda Mobile Power Pack e: Making battery sharing a reality

The partnership resulted in Gachaco, Inc., a sharing service for standardised swappable batteries. In addition, ENEOS, Honda, Kawasaki Motors, Suzuki, and Yamaha Motor have provided a BAAS (Battery as a Service) solution. This enables electric scooters to travel longer distances, eliminating worries about running out of battery charge. Gachaco services use Honda Mobile Power Pack e, meeting common spec requirements.

With more reliable and accessible battery-sharing solutions, eco-friendly riders will have more choices for their mobility. The collaboration of the big four Japanese manufacturers will help promote electric scooters in Japan and other countries.

Suzuki plans to launch its new Burgman Electric scooter in India next year, competing with TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and the upcoming Honda Activa Electric. The expected price of the Suzuki Burgman electric is around Rs 1.5 lakh.
