Patent of KTM Automatic Gearbox Leaked - Close Look into the Impressive Engineering

Semi-automatic gearboxes are coming into the limelight now. KTM’s leaked patent for an automated gearbox surfaced online. Looks like the brand is developing it now with simple mechanics but with cost-effectiveness.

As the shift to electric is inevitable for mobility players, OEMs are working towards developing advanced technologies for their ICE-based motorcycles. KTM is working towards developing an automatic gearbox for its 1301cc LC8 V-twin engine. It’s a popular engine which is equipped in most of the KTM motorcycles for touring. This engine is equipped with bikes like KTM 1290 Super Duke GT and KTM 1290 Super Adventure S/R. These bikes' 2024/2025 versions are under production.

The manual gearbox is undoubtedly highly responsive and gives a better sense of control, but the automated gearbox has its own unique charm. Like it helps users avoid the risks of stalling and purely focus on riding the motorcycle. Additionally, this as well helps the riders break through the heavy traffic.

KTM Automatic Gearbox - Its Complete Functionality!

With KTM planning and implementing advanced & automated gearbox technology, this pioneer brand will gain an edge against competitors. Honda took the first mover advantage with its DCT gearbox and sold above 2 Lakh motorcycles in Europe

Honda’s DCT system involves very complex engineering. It offers advanced electronic and hydraulic systems. Moreover, the clutch and shifter aren’t packed for use conventionally. KTM’s automatic gearbox is much simpler than Honda’s gearbox.

What’s More in KTM Automatic Gearbox?

KTM automatic gearbox features a centrifugal clutch that connects the transmission and engine. It’s different from the SCS (Smart Clutch System) equipped in MV Agusta. KTM automatic gearbox offers a rev range which is higher than idle, this allows the users to start & stop the vehicle without using the clutch lever.

Automated Gearbox - An Ultimate Solution Preventing Bike Rolling on a Slope

The patent applied by KTM bypasses the ultimate problem related to centrifugal clutch. This system allows the bike to stay stable on a slope with a gear engaged. It happens because the centrifugal clutch, by default, is set to disengage while disconnecting the engine from the transmission. This is the complete opposite of the regular clutch.

This problem can be resolved by having a separate parking brake. MV Agusta, a leading OEM, is already adopting this solution.

KTM has produced a different tracking system equipped inside a gearbox. This prevents the bike from turning, further preventing it from rolling when put on a side stand.

The company has added an L-shaped pawl which helps control the turning of the transmission. This L-shaped pawl is handled by the shift drum that engages pawl only when a rider selects “Park”. This further disrupts the transmission from turning.

An eclectic actuator is an important component in automated gearbox of KTM. It helps in the movement of the shift drum. With this electric actuator, the bike's electronics control the bike’s working.

Hope this technology helps the motorcycle riders and adds to their experience.
