As electric motorcycles gain traction, it’s no surprise that mainstream bike manufacturers are gearing up to tap into this rising industry, too. The first of the big names in the industry, Kawasaki has also entered this market now with its first full-sized e-bikes - Ninja E-1 & Z E-1 for 2024.
Both of these electric bikes draw heavy inspiration from the existing & popular Ninja 400 & Z40, with an electrifying spark to it.
2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 & Z e-1 caters to the entry-level segment, basically equivalent to the 125cc ICE bikes. Under the hood, both of these bikes hide an air-cooled, permanent magnet synchronous motor that delivers 12 bhp (9kW, with a continuous output of 6kW) and 39.32Nm peak torque. This translates to a claimed top speed of around 62mph, with a nifty 'E-boost' feature that revs it up a few notches for 15 seconds.
This new e-boost feature allows you to boost its top speed by a few miles for 15 secs. Making it perfect for zipping through city roads. The company does claim the bike to have a stronger acceleration. This results in better overtaking abilities.
Tech-wise, they come with two power modes (road and eco) and a handy walk mode for parking convenience. Plus, a staple 4.3-inch TFT instrument cluster keeps you in control.
Now, about the range – both e-bikes boast a combined 44 miles, which may not sound impressive, but here's the kicker: you can easily swap out the Li-ion battery packs or wait around 3.7 hours for a full charge.
Looking at the hardware is where the bikes bring a strong resemblance with the Ninja 400 & Z400. Kawasaki has fitted the electric bikes with a trellis chassis identical to their existing ICEs on the market.
Even its suspension, which is managed by non-adjustable 41 mm telescopic forks & monoshock. The suspension system is further partnered with a pair of 17-inch wheels. As for the braking system, the bike will feature a 290 mm disc up front (20 mm smaller than the 400s) & a 220 mm unit outback (same as the 400s), both bit by two-pot callipers.
The new Kawasaki EVs are a spitting image of their 400S model counterparts. The Ninja e-1 mirrors the sleek fairings and iconic two-pod LED headlight of the N400, while the Z e-1 rocks the same edgy LED headlight and tank shrouds as the Z400.
Both the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 & Z e-1 are slated to enter the United Kingdom in the next month. Once launched, we’ll get to have more information about its pricing, features and range. Sadly though, the company has not expressed any interest in launching these models in the Indian market yet.
