The single-cylinder G 310 series from BMW Motorrad appears to be getting equipped with the ShiftCam variable valve timing technology.
BMW G 310 series single-cylinder model lineup has been hampered by the underwhelming 312 cc engine, but the German manufacturer may soon rectify this problem with an update.
A newly filed patent reveals a ShiftCam single-cylinder engine that utilises two distinct cam profiles for its inlet valves. It is expected that the upgraded engine will be incorporated into the G 310 series models.
BMW has filed a patent for a ShiftCam system in a single-cylinder engine that incorporates dual overhead camshafts. Although BMW's single-cylinder models are limited to the G 310 bikes and C 400 range of scooters, the latter utilises a single overhead camshaft.
Therefore, it is highly likely that the patent drawings refer specifically to the G 310 models, unless BMW is developing an entirely new single-cylinder engine.
The system employs a solenoid actuator to move the intake camshaft longitudinally, allowing it to engage different cam profiles with the inlet valves. Two cam profiles are utilised - one for low RPMs with shorter duration and lower lift, and the other for high RPMs with longer duration and higher lift.
This variability is only present in the inlet valves, as the exhaust valves maintain the same timing, duration, and lift throughout the entire range of revolutions per minute.
At present, there is no information on whether BMW is collaborating with its partner TVS on the development of this system for their 310cc models. Both the BMW G 310 series and TVS Apache RR 310 currently share the same powertrain, and as a performance-oriented motorcycle, the Apache RR 310 could potentially benefit from the new ShiftCam technology.
