KTM Parallel-Twin Engine Documents Leaked: Here’s What to Expect

It is well known that KTM is developing a new parallel-twin engine for its forthcoming models, including the recently spotted RC 990, which will have a displacement of about 1,000cc. A closer look at the internal modifications KTM made to its new parallel-twin mill is now possible thanks to fresh pictures that have appeared online.

Latest KTM 990cc Parallel-Twin Engine: Specs

The 790 Duke, which has been revised for 2023, introduced the liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine from KTM, which at the time had a 799cc displacement. The displacement was later enlarged to 889cc and installed in the 890 family of bikes, which includes the 890 Duke, 890 Duke R, 890 Adventure, and 890 Adventure R, after the strict Euro-5/BS6 emission requirements went into effect.

The first time around, the displacement was increased from 799cc to 889cc in a relatively simple manner by extending the bore from 88mm to 90.7mm while leaving the 68.8mm stroke unaltered.

In contrast to the 889cc engine, the KTM parallel-twin engine this time has undergone extensive reworking and is equipped with a new head, engine casings, oil sump, and exhaust ports. For example, the new engine’s oil sump has been shifted to one side, possibly to make room for a larger catalytic converter to comply with the tighter emission standards. Practically speaking, this engine is brand-new.

The new mill is said to displace close to 1,000cc, while its actual capacity is yet unknown. However, at least 3 new models—the 990 Duke, RC 990, and a 990 adventure—will certainly be born from this new engine.

There is currently no information available on power or torque ratings. Still, considering that the 890 Duke R generates 121hp and the 790 Duke produces 105bhp, it is plausible that the new engine will produce between 140 and 145hp. Compared to the 955cc L-Twin in the Ducati Panigale V2 and Streetfighter V2, it will be comparable.

It is still being determined whether this engine will swap out for the one in the 890 Duke or be offered separately. Guess we’ll have to wait for any further updates on the same.
