Yamaha had initially planned to introduce Neo's electric scooter in the Indian market. However, the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer has now decided to cancel those plans. Instead, Yamaha will work towards developing a more premium and sporty electric offering for the Indian market.
Yamaha showed intention to introduce the Neo's electric scooter in India last year. The company had made necessary modifications to cater to the needs of the Indian market. However, there have been significant changes in regulations and subsidies related to electric vehicles in India since then. As a result, Yamaha has decided to reassess its plans and reconsider Neo's electric scooter launch.
In an interview, Eishin Chihana, Yamaha India's Chairman, highlighted the preferences of the Indian electric vehicle market. However, the market tends to prioritise value, and there is also a demand for premium and aspirational products. Considering this, Yamaha planned to develop an "exciting, stylish, and sporty" electric offering to cater to these demands.
Chihana emphasised that the upcoming electric scooter from Yamaha will prioritise reinforcing the brand's image. Yamaha aims to capture customers' attention by seeking a premium, aspirational electric vehicle option.
The upcoming electric scooter resembles popular models like Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro, or Simple One. The focus is creating an exciting, sporty electric offering for the Indian market. These models have gained attention in the Indian market for their performance, features, and distinctive design.
Scrapping the plans for Neo's electric scooter and developing a new product from scratch is a logical decision for Yamaha. The Neo was originally designed to keep European riders in mind and adapt it for the Indian market. Yamaha has scrapped plans for their Neo electric scooter and is developing a new product for the Indian market. The Neo was designed for European riders, and adapting it for India would not be practical.
The development of Yamaha's electric scooter for the Indian market is already underway. The launch of the Electric Scooter is still taking a few years to release. Yamaha will have to price the product without relying on the FAME 2 subsidies. The FAME 2 scheme provides financial incentives for electric vehicles in India, including scooters.
