New Honda EM1 Electric Scooter Debuts Globally

This newcomer electric scooter has a swappable battery, providing a range of 48 km.

The 2023 Honda EM1 electric scooter focuses on swappable batteries with the Honda Power Pack-e, which weighs 10.3 kg and is compatible with an AC charger. This could make it more convenient for short commutes, as riders could easily swap out the battery.

Honda's main target is young audiences and short commuters in Europe with the EM1's distinct design language. Its larger plan is to release 10 or more electric 2W vehicles by 2025 and to go carbon neutral by 2040

It seems like Honda is taking strategic steps to adapt to the changing automotive industry. Honda is also responsible for battery disposal and recycling. It also allows buyers to lease, rent, or subscribe to the scooter, battery, and charger. It could make it more accessible and affordable for potential customers.

Colour Options Available for Honda EM1

Honda is positioning the EM1 as a high-quality urban mobility option for shorter commutes. It is leveraging its swappable battery network to provide greater convenience to riders. The three colour choices for the Honda EM1 -

  • Pearl Sunbeam White
  • Digital Silver Metallic
  • Matte Ballistic Black Metallic - seem stylish and modern.

The EM1 doesn't feature pedals, despite having "Electric Moped" in its name.

Battery Specifications of Honda EM1

The 50.3 V and 29.4 Ah Li-ion battery for the EM1 weighs 10.3 kg and has a capacity of 1.47 kWh. The optional 270W AC charger can charge the battery from 0-100% in 6 hours and 25-75% in 2 hours 40 minutes, providing riders with flexibility in charging their scooter.

The brushless hub motor rated at 0.58 kW (0.77 bhp) and peak output of 1.7 kW (2.27 bhp) seems adequate for urban commuting, and the 45 km/h top speed is reasonable as well. The Honda EM1 seems to offer a decent package for urban commuters looking for an electric scooter with swappable battery technology.

The range of up to 48 km in ECON mode and the promise of 2,500 charge cycles for the battery seems impressive, although its performance in real-world conditions is to be seen. The 270W AC charger also seems convenient for those who need to charge their scooter at home or work.

Honda EM1 - Impressive Design & Features

The underbone chassis and telescopic suspension up front should offer a comfortable ride, while the Combi Braking system adds a layer of safety. Some other features include a Ground Clearance of 130mm, a wheelbase of 130mm, and a seat height of 740mm.

The Honda EM1 e-scooter features an LCD instrument panel and full LED lighting, including a signature LED daytime running light. The other features include a long seat, optional 35L top box, pillion grab rail and flush foot pegs. However, the under-seat storage capacity is only 3.3L, and the front luggage provisions are to hold a 500ml PET bottle. It also comes with a USB port.

The New Honda EM1 Electric Scooter can be charged at Home by the AC Charger or at the nearest Honda Power Back Swapping Stations. Recently, Honda removed its 6G suffix, it will launch Activa Electric in India next year.
