Kinetic Engineering Ltd has finally begun the production of an Electric version of Luna. The main chassis, side stand, main stand, and swing arm are just a few of the important subassemblies that Kinetic Engineering Ltd has built. The company has also put up a special production line with an initial capacity of 5,000 units per month.
The components for the E-Luna, an electric moped that will be manufactured by Kinetic Green Energy & Power Solutions, the sister company of Pune-based Kinetic Engineering (KEL), the flagship firm of the Kinetic Group, will begin soon.
Kinetic Engineering introduced the Luna 50 years ago; at the time, it cost Rs 2,000, making it one of India’s most practical, efficient, cost-effective, and affordable modes of transportation options. At its height, the Luna sold 2,000 units per day, dominating the moped market with a 95% market share.
All of the primary subassemblies for the E-Luna, including the main chassis, main stand, side stand, and swing arm, have been designed by Kinetic Engineering. The company has also put up a special production line with an initial capacity of 5,000 sets per month.
A new line of around 30 welding machines installed in a specialised shop within the facility will be used to weld these vital and diverse parts. In its massive facility in Ahmednagar, all the assemblies will be professionally assembled and painted as required. The company has spent more than Rs 3 crore renovating its fabrication, press, and paint operations to satisfy the needs. At an estimated yearly cost of roughly Rs. 30 crores, the components for E-Luna will significantly increase KEL’s revenue starting in the first quarter of 2019.
Ajinkya Firodia, MD at Kinetic Engineering, said, “It is amazing that the iconic Luna is coming back in its E-Avatar! We are very proud to be making all the major subassemblies of the same and be a part of this legacy! At its peak Luna was selling over 2000 nos per day. I am sure it will do very well in its new avatar. We expect this business to add over Rs 30 crore annually over the next 2-3 years as the volumes of the E-Luna increase. This will also help KEL to boost its presence in the EV segment. KEL is emerging as a one stop shop for all the major mechanical subassemblies for electric two- and three-wheelers, which have witnessed explosive growth over the past 12 months.”
