In the recent Honda event, where the company revealed its new Honda Activa H-Smart variant, the MD and CEO, Atsushi Ogata, also announced the firm's future EV plans.
As was expected, the electric version of Honda's most popular Activa scooter will be its first electric vehicle (EV) for India. Ogata claims that Activa Electric will make its debut at the same time the following year, in January 2024. It will be interesting to see how Activa Electric will match the level of ICE-based competition's popularity.
The majority of new launches in the electric two-wheeler market strive to outperform their nearest rivals in terms of range, top speed, performance specifications, etc. Still, Activa Electric seems to be taking a very different strategy. Reliability will be Activa Electric's primary concern. Its top speed will be 50 kmph, which is far less than the 80–100 kmph industry standard.
It will effectively be a transplant position at Activa Electric. Honda seems to be taking a conservative approach in order to prevent any unfavourable outcomes. Because EV technology is new, extensive testing is necessary to make sure everything operates properly and safely. In addition, a permanent battery configuration at Activa Electric will lessen the possibility of accidents like fires brought on by improper handling.
Visually, Activa Electric will look very similar to the present Activa, which is ICE-based. To reduce expenses, hardware like the suspension and brake system might be shared. The range of the Activa Electric is probably not very long, especially when compared to vehicles like the Hero Vida V1 Pro, which has a certified range of 165 km.
Honda intends to introduce another electric scooter in India after the Activa electric. The foundation for this will be a brand-new born-electric platform. It will be a popular EV product with features comparable to those of the most popular electric scooters now on the market. Honda's second electric scooter in India will include a swappable battery pack in contrast to the Activa Electric.
Before introducing its second EV, Honda has set a goal to open battery-swapping stations at the majority of its consumer touchpoints in the nation. Honda's second EV won't be affected by problems like range anxiety because of the more than 6000 battery switching facilities. If Honda offered subscription-based options without battery costs, ownership costs might be decreased as well.
Although Honda's development of EVs may appear to be moving slowly, there are good reasons for the holdup. Ogata said they could have easily imported their electric vehicles from China and distributed them in India. That's not the case, though.
Honda is concentrating on creating items that are unique to India and reaching a high level of localisation. Even typically imported components like battery packs and e-motors are expected to be acquired locally. Honda will devote a significant portion of its investments in FY 2023–2024 to the construction of EV manufacturing facilities and related infrastructure. In India, Honda has already established a subsidiary that will produce battery packs.
Honda will soon enter the EV market, but according to Ogata, traditional ICE-based scooters will still rule the market. For the foreseeable future, Honda's two-wheelers with ICE engines will make up a large portion of its sales. Its first EV, the Activa Electric, is intended for people with restricted running. The ideal option will still be ICE Activa for more frequent use over longer distances.
