Hero MotoCorp, in its annual report, revealed that it would collaborate with Zero Motorcycles' and will bring its portfolio of electric bikes to India. It states that the California-based EV manufacturer will also produce motorcycles in India. Hero MotoCorp further claimed that this collaboration would allow the company to leverage Zero's expertise. Moreover, it will help them build electric motorcycles by combining their manufacturing and distribution capabilities.
Hero MotoCorp announced a collaboration with Zero Motorcycles last year, with an equity investment of up to USD 60 million in it. The Indian motorbike manufacturer would also focus on co-developing electric bikes, as it did with the Harley-Davidson X440. Zero Motorcycle's current portfolio consists of various motorcycles, from a fully faired sports tourer to street naked bikes and from ADV to Scramblers.
The Ultraviolette F77 is the only performance-oriented electric Motorcycle offering the highest range in India. In addition, the F77's 10.3kWh battery is the largest among all EVs in India. In contrast, Zero's range includes bikes with a battery capacity of up to 17.3kWh. As a result, bikes with such large capacity batteries would be more expensive than the Ultraviolette in India. It produces challenges for them to compete in a price-sensitive market like ours.
In partnership with Zero, Hero is co-developing a motorcycle based on an existing Zero EV, such as the SR. The EV can have a 15.6kWh battery with a stated city range of 272km. It will have a motor with peak power and torque of 74PS and 166Nm and a top speed of 167kmph. Hero MotoCorp will likely build its line of electric motorcycles based on the expertise it has gained from this collaboration.
We have seen several partnerships being done among different manufacturers in recent times.
The Indian two-wheeler sector, with the partnerships among Hero-Harley-Davidson and Triumph-Bajaj, is the most notable example. As a result, huge bikes with high build quality are now affordable in India. The collaboration with Hero MotoCorp and Zero Motorcycles may now have the same impact in the Indian EV market.
