The Honda Unicorn is the most economical option available here, with ex-showroom pricing that is a full Rs 88,000 less than that of the Yamaha R15M in its Monster Energy Moto GP Edition livery. But compared to the majority of bikes in this area, the Unicorn has no extras besides its trustworthy engine and outstanding road characteristics.
The FZ Fi, FZ-S Fi, and FZ-X motorcycles from Yamaha are the next on the list. Unfortunately, despite having certain amenities like smartphone connectivity (though no navigation), they don’t seem to have that “it” factor.
With the Pulsar P150 and Pulsar N160, Bajaj has the lion’s market share in that segment. Although they are among the uncommon handful with a semi-analogue cluster, their engines provide a practical balance of commuting comfort and occasional joyrides. A similar situation exists for Hero, whose Xtreme 160R leans even more towards precise handling and providing acceptable performance numbers (courtesy of its light kerb weight).
With the Apache 160 pair, TVS has done an outstanding job climbing the performance and feature ladder. Although the Apache RTR 160 2V still essentially has a 15-year-old engine, it still performs admirably. The most recent model with smartphone connectivity, which includes navigation in addition to the standard call/message alerts, also keeps up with the times.
Finally, when it comes to all-out performance, the Yamaha R15 V4 and the MT-15 V2 are evenly matched because they both feature the same 155cc liquid-cooled VVA engine, which has the highest specs in its class. Additionally, the R15 V4 provides riding aids like traction control and an optional quick-shifter. However, as was already said, all of this is expensive.
Strangely, though, neither vehicle offers navigation as a choice despite supporting smartphone connectivity.
As a result, India’s 150-160cc market caters to a wide range of consumers, from the no-nonsense commuter to the tech-savvy young, the weekend traveller, and even the knee-down junkie. So your wallet is the only constraint!
