R 18 B Heavy Duty is a unique motorcycle created by German customizer Fred Kodlin in partnership with BMW Motorrad. It has a futuristic design that looks like it belongs in outer space. The motorcycle was made for Daytona Bike Week after months of hard work and is based on the R 18 B model.
Kodlin and his son Len worked together on the bike and changed a lot of metal parts. The hardest part was changing the bike's frame to make it lower and more comfortable. The R 18 B Heavy Duty is their joint project. “We have rebuilt the upper tubes to reduce the seat height and the fly-line of the R 18 B,” Kodlin said.
The bike has a lower windshield cut from an original BMW accessory. The steering parts have been modified to adjust the tilt and improve the handling.
The Heavy Duty has a sleek profile that curves down from the windshield to the back. The seating area has a prominent curve that connects smoothly to the side cases.
It took about three months to make the bodywork because they created a new sheet metal tank that was longer than the original and had a smooth shape with side edges.
They also changed the connection between the tank and the rear frame. The bike maker kept the mobile charging case as original from R 18 B.
Marcel Sinnwell, a tattoo artist, did the bike’s paintwork. He used translucent paint to create colour gradients with an airbrush. The R 18 B Heavy Duty also has hand-painted pinstripes and an airbrushed pattern on the back mudguard, featuring Kodlin and “100 years of BMW Motorrad.”
