KTM announces 1290 Super Duke RR and SMT models

The hardcore Super Duke RR has an 11 kg weight over the Super Duke R Evo.

Using the 1290 Super Duke R as a base model, KTM has once again unleashed its 1290 Super Duke RR (the last one was in 2021). However, the 2023 version of the Austrian beast is even more extreme than its predecessor.

  • The new paint scheme for 2023 includes black/orange/white.
  • New KTM available only in single-seater
  • SMT moniker will join KTM's line-up soon

What's new in the 2023 KTM 1290 Super Duke RR?

One remarkable feature of the 1290 Super Duke RR is its 1:1 power-to-weight ratio- assuming the bike has no fluids or fuel. This means that its massive 1,301 cc V-Twin engine produces 180 bhp while the bike weighs only 180 kg.

The bike achieves this low weight by using special parts such as a carbon fibre subframe, custom-made WP suspension components. These parts can be adjusted fully including many CNC machine components throughout the bike.

In addition, the bike has an Akrapovic slip- on exhaust by default. Customers can also choose a titanium full-system exhaust as an extra option if they want.

The 1290 Super Duke RR has a lot of rider aids and the Track pack to help the rider control all this power without losing balance and crashing. The standard bike does not have these features by default, and they cost extra.

The Super Duke RR has a new colour option for 2023 that has a shiny black/carbon base with white and orange accents. Unfortunately, like the 2021 version, the Super Duke RR is only made in 500 units globally and can only be bought from some KTM dealers.

The 1290 Super Duke RR is focused on extreme performance. KTM is working on a new model that will balance performance and practicality- the revived SMT or Super Moto Touring

This is based on the ADV bike, like the old 990 SMT, but with 17-inch wheels on both sides. The new SMT has the same body shape and low fuel tanks as the current mid-sized KTM adventure bikes.

This bike might also be the first KTM model to use the new 990 cc parallel-twin engine, which has been seen testing as the RC 990 abroad

KTM used to make a V-twin 990 SMT, which shared the parts from the old 990 Super Duke (its top model then). This bike had a big front fairing, a comfortable seat and space to keep luggage.
