BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS Discontinued in India Or Not?

BMW Motorrad India has discontinued the G 310 R and G 310 GS motorcycles, according to reports. Dealers have confirmed that the stock of both models has been exhausted. Also, the G 310 R has been taken off the official BMW India website.

BMW currently retails the G 310 RR supersport bike exclusively in India. It is possible that this has been discontinued because of heightened competition from competitors with improved performance and specs. But BMW is developing a new 450cc platform, which may see some thrilling models arrive in the future.

Why Were the BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS Discontinued?

BMW G 310 R

BMW G 310 R and G 310 GS were well-engineered motorcycles with an upscale badge. The G 310 R was a street fighter, and the G 310 GS was an adventure tourer. Both motorcycle models were propelled by a liquid-cooled 312cc, single-cylinder engine that put out 34PS and 28Nm of torque. The figures were quite good but struggled to match comparison motorcycles with similar or better power at lower price points.

Competition Made It Tough for BMW’s 310cc Bikes

One of the biggest reasons for the discontinuation is competition. The KTM 390 Duke, which costs Rs 2,95,000 (ex-showroom), offers 12PS and 11 Nm more power than the G 310 R. Additionally, it comes with several advanced features, including a TFT display, quickshifter, and even cruise control. In contrast, the G 310 R, priced at Rs 2,90,000, felt basic in comparison. Other than the BMW logo, it had little to offer for the price.

The G 310 GS also struggled to compete in the adventure touring segment. Its price of Rs 3,30,000 made it expensive compared to its competitors. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, which is Rs 32,000 cheaper, offers 6PS and 12Nm more power. The KTM 390 Adventure, priced at Rs 3,67,699, provides superior touring capabilities, adjustable suspension, traction control, and more off-road features.

Another reason for the discontinuation is BMW’s lack of major updates to the 310cc platform. While KTM and Royal Enfield continued to improve their bikes, BMW did not introduce any significant changes. Riders looking for the latest technology and features found better alternatives in the market.

Although BMW still sells the G 310 RR in India, it may not be available for long. The bike is based on the TVS Apache RR 310 but offers fewer features. Other than the premium branding, it does not offer much more than its TVS counterpart.

What’s Next for BMW Motorrad in India?

Even though BMW Motorrad discontinued the G 310 R and G 310 GS, it is concentrating on upcoming models. BMW Motorrad is working on a 450cc parallel-twin engine platform, which may be a game-changer.

BMW unveiled the F 450 GS concept at the Indian Auto Expo, giving a suggestion of a fresh adventure bike. Following the introduction of the F 450 GS production model, BMW can introduce a streetfighter motorcycle with this engine as well. But that might take two or three years before these machines reach the Indian market.
